What are the implications of filling a warhead with ALIMX-101 versus PBXN-109?

DSIAC staff provided information for the better understanding of the implications of filling a large warhead with ALIMX-101 vs. PBXN-109. A DSIAC energetics subject matter expert (SME) provided a short description of the rationale for the Department of Defense transition from cast-cure PBXN to the maturing technology of a melt-cast IMX/ALIMX based explosive fill, which improves fill efficiency while maintaining the required insensitive munitions and detonation performance capabilities of PBXN-based fills. A summary of ALIMX-101 related documents was provided. This included the FY2017-18 Insensitive Munitions Strategic Plan for Program Executive Officer (PEO) Weapons, which provides a good source summary for the objectives, accomplishments to date and plan going forward for additional development related to use of ALIMX-101.
