Welcome to the “Aircraft Combat Survivability 101” course! This self-paced online program is designed for technical professionals in the defense industry and anyone with a technical background seeking a foundational understanding of aircraft survivability principles. In approximately four hours, you will gain a comprehensive overview of this critical discipline and its application to aircraft design, development, and acquisition.

This course will guide you through the core concepts of survivability, killability, susceptibility, and vulnerability, establishing a framework for understanding how aircraft interact with hostile environments. You’ll learn how to measure survivability, analyze threats and kill chains, and apply mathematical formulas to calculate survivability probabilities in various engagement scenarios. While the math is basic, familiarity with quantitative concepts will be helpful.

Beyond individual aircraft, we’ll explore mission and campaign-level survivability, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to enhancing the overall effectiveness of air operations. You’ll also discover practical strategies for improving aircraft survivability through susceptibility and vulnerability reduction techniques. Finally, we’ll examine the role of live fire testing, modeling, and simulation in evaluating and improving aircraft survivability, and reinforce the importance of considering survivability across all stages of the aircraft lifecycle. Upon completion of this course, you will have a solid understanding of the principles, methodologies, and key considerations involved in ensuring the combat survivability of modern aircraft.
